Police combat early marriages, dropouts in Karonga District schools
This proactive approach by local law enforcement underscores the growing concern over educational challenges in rural Malawi and efforts to address them through community engagement.
KARONGA, Malawi— Karonga District Police are intensifying efforts to address rising early marriages and school dropouts among youth, writes Lumbani Kaunda.
On Friday, Kelvin Mulezo, Officer in Charge for Karonga Police, emphasized the importance of educating learners, community policing groups, parents, and teachers during a visit to Kapilikalanda Primary School.
"It's imperative that the community recognizes these issues and works together to address them," Mulezo said, urging residents to report incidents to help mitigate the problems.
Thomas Mkwala, headteacher at Kapilikalanda Primary School, welcomed the police intervention. He reported that about 45 students have dropped out due to early marriages since last year.
Mkwala highlighted challenges faced by the school, located 15 kilometers from the main road.
Poor road conditions have limited access, with police vehicles being the only means to reach the school since 1999.
The police initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage community involvement in reducing early marriages and school dropouts, working towards a better future for Karonga District's youth.
