Patricia Kaliati Working on Third Book About Old Age
The National Statistical Office's 2018 census found nearly 630,000 Malawians aged 65 and above out of a total population topping 17.5 million.
LILONGWE, Malawi—Patricia Kaliati, a former government minister in Malawi, says she is writing a third book focused on life in old age, writes Jonathan Mzumazi.
Kaliati, who previously published "She Participates" in 2021 and "The Path Out of Poverty - The Future of Girl Child Education" in 2022, disclosed her new book titled "Life in the Old Age" while speaking at a youth retreat Tuesday.
"Currently I am writing another book 'Life in the Old Age' which is talking about things people face when they are growing old," Kaliati told youths at St. Anthony of Padua parish in Lilongwe Archdiocese.
The 68-year-old former minister of gender, children and social welfare is a self-proclaimed gender activist whose first book encouraged women's participation across different sectors of society.
"She Participates" promoted women joining church groups, hospital and school committees, and village banks to learn new skills and improve their livelihoods.
Her second book focused on the importance of girls' education to overcome poverty based on research by the World Bank and United Nations agencies.
At the church event, Kaliati urged youths to abstain from premarital sex to protect their futures.
Kaliati has not announced a publication date for "Life in the Old Age," her third book exploring issues faced by Malawi's elderly population.
