Pan-African Philanthropy Initiative Gets New Name: Harambee~Ubuntu
The new name underscores the initiative's commitment to supporting social movements and activists working towards justice and equity in Africa.
Nairobi, Kenya - TrustAfrica and Urgent Action Fund-Africa jointly announced the renaming of their pan-African and Feminist Philanthropies Initiative to "Harambee~Ubuntu Pan-African and Feminist Philanthropies", writes Winston Mwale.
The decision, reached during a strategic meeting in Kenya from 1-2 March 2024, reflects a shift towards a more African-centered identity.
"We have always aspired to have an African name that reclaims the internationalist and intersectional agendas of pan-Africanism and feminism in philanthropy," the statement said.
"Harambee" signifies the act of working together for a common purpose, while "Ubuntu" embodies the interconnectedness and shared humanity that underpins the initiative's values.
"This name change affirms the rich history of African giving – rooted in solidarity, mutuality and collective humanity that have been ignored and internationally silenced," the statement added.
The new name underscores the initiative's commitment to supporting social movements and activists working towards justice and equity in Africa.
It builds on the existing collaboration between Urgent Action Fund-Africa, a feminist organization providing rapid response funding to African women's human rights defenders, and TrustAfrica, a pan-African foundation supporting African-led solutions.
Both organizations expressed optimism about the future of the initiative.
"We are excited about the possibilities that Harambee~Ubuntu brings and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts," the statement concluded.
