Pacific Group Condemns Vandalism of Boreholes in Zomba, Malawi
In Zomba-Thondwe Constituency alone, the organization targets repairing about 80 broken boreholes and has rehabilitated over 70 so far.
ZOMBA, Malawi — The Pacific Group, a corporate organization, has condemned the growing tendency to vandalize boreholes for spare parts in some parts of Malawi, leaving hundreds without access to clean water, writes Gift Kaimira.
Abdul Majeed, vice team leader for the organization, made the statement Tuesday in Balon Village at Thondwe in Zomba. "Communities should be on the forefront safeguarding boreholes from thieves who steal spare parts," Majeed said.
The Pacific Group is committed to ensuring that people, especially in rural areas, have access to safe, clean water.
In Zomba-Thondwe Constituency alone, the organization targets repairing about 80 broken boreholes and has rehabilitated over 70 so far.
Villages reached in the constituency include Mbiza, Chikhwaza, Ntchamilo, Mponda 2 and Nembere.
This initiative is part of the group's corporate social responsibility, focusing on free borehole maintenance across various constituencies nationwide.
According to Majeed, the project will aid girls and women who struggle to access clean water in targeted areas. So far, Pacific Limited has fixed over 8,000 boreholes.
This initiative was praised by the finance minister in his 2024 budget speech.
