Organic Farming Project Empowers Over 1,000 Farmers in Malawi's Mzimba District
Operating during the 2023/24 agricultural season, the project concluded in 2024 but expects its educational impact to continue expanding across the region.
MZIMBA, Malawi— A knowledge-sharing initiative focused on organic agriculture has transformed farming practices for more than 1,000 farmers in Mzimba district, local officials reported, writes Tionge Hara.
The Knowledge for Organic Agriculture in Southern Africa project, implemented by the Soils, Food, and Healthy Communities organisation and supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation, used innovative educational approaches including radio programs, dramas, and printed materials to disseminate agricultural knowledge.
Farmer Blessings Moyo credited the project with improving agricultural techniques.
"Through the books and radio programs, we can understand and apply new techniques, which has significantly improved our farming practices," Moyo said.
The project targeted sustainable agricultural practices, aiming to enhance food security, improve livelihoods, and promote environmental health.
By providing farmers with practical, accessible learning materials, the initiative helped participants better manage crop production from harvesting to planting.
Operating during the 2023/24 agricultural season, the project concluded in 2024 but expects its educational impact to continue expanding across the region.
Organisers believe the knowledge transfer will have lasting effects on agricultural development in Malawi, demonstrating the potential of targeted farmer education programs.
