Opposition Leader Nankhumwa "Launches" People's Development Party Amid DPP Turmoil
The formation of the PDP adds a new dimension to Malawi's political landscape, with Nankhumwa breaking away from the former ruling party to chart his own path.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Kondwani Nankhumwa, the embattled Leader of Opposition in Parliament, announced the formation of a new party called the People's Development Party (PDP), adding a new dimension to Malawi's political landscape amid his ongoing legal battle with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) over the position of Leader of Opposition in Parliament, writes Ziliro Mchulu.
While Nankhumwa announced the PDP's establishment on his Facebook page, it is not clear if he is heading the new party.
In its inaugural press statement, the PDP unveiled its vision centered on fostering sustainable development, empowering communities, ensuring food security, and promoting a hard work ethos.
"We are thrilled to establish the PDP, a beacon of progress and inclusivity," said interim Secretary General Simeon Phiri, who expressed gratitude to authorities for facilitating the party's registration.
While promising a full press conference soon to introduce interim leaders and outline core values, the statement hinted at priorities like advocating "meaningful change" and charting "a path of progress and prosperity."
The PDP's emergence shakes up Malawi's politics, with Nankhumwa potentially losing his opposition leader role by leaving the DPP, which came second in the last elections according to parliamentary procedure.
