DOWA, Malawi-The Office of the Ombudsman in Dowa has encouraged citizens to report cases of maladministration and poor service delivery by public officials, writes Mphatso M'bang'ombe.
Speaking during a market rally in Dowa Boma, Director of Information, Documentation, and Civic Education Felix Masekesa said that the office is mandated to investigate such matters.
"The Ombudsman's office is mandated to investigate cases of maladministration and poor service delivery by public officials. We are here to listen to your complaints and take action where necessary," Masekesa said.
He called on citizens to demand transparency and accountability from public officials, saying that they have a right to good service delivery.
"You have a right to good service delivery. You should not be afraid to report cases of maladministration and poor service delivery to the Ombudsman's office," Masekesa said.
He added that citizens can report cases of maladministration and poor service delivery to the Ombudsman's office through a number of channels, including calling the toll-free number 111, visiting the nearest Ombudsman's office, emailing the office, or reporting to the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) offices.
In a separate interview, Senior Group Village Headman (SGVH) Vilikuja of Traditional Authority Msakambewa thanked the Office of the Ombudsman for the awareness campaign.
"I would like to thank the Ombudsman's office for this awareness campaign. Many people in this district are not aware of the role of the Ombudsman's office. This campaign will help to raise awareness and encourage people to report cases of maladministration and poor service delivery," Vilikuja said.
The Office of the Ombudsman is implementing these activities in Dowa district with funding from the Government of Malawi.
