Nyasa Capital Finance is sponsoring the tournament with 23 million kwacha for each region.
MZIMBA, Malawi- The Northern Region Football Association launched the third edition of the Nyasa Capital Finance Cup on Saturday at Jenda Ground, writes Victor Musongole.
In the opening match, hosts Jenda United lost 1-0 to visiting Mzimba Young Bullets. Mzimba's Chance Patulani scored the lone goal.
"The cup has given teams to continue playing after the league and the inclusion of division one and Castel district champions will unearth talents," said Masiya Nyasulu, the association's general secretary.
Henry Mwagomba from sponsor Nyasa Capital Finance said the tournament has increased engagement with the company's services since it began sponsorship.
Jenda United coach Harlod Phiri accepted the defeat, citing poor midfield play and complacency from his players.
"We were poor especially in the midfield and upfront we failed to convert chances," he said.
Mzimba Young Bullets coach Andrew Banda praised his players' fighting spirit, especially after having a player red-carded before halftime.
"We had a red card before half time so I told them not to concede," he said.
Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere said sports will help youth stay away from immoral behavior.
Reigning champions Mayamiko Stars will look to defend their title after winning on penalties last year against Chitipa United.
