NWRA Warns of Closure for Non-compliant Boreholes, Urges Certification
NWRA CEO Dwight Kambuku made the announcement at a press conference in Lilongwe.
LILONGWE, MALAWI — The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has issued a warning that it will shut down all boreholes in the country that fail to meet recommended standards, writes Chifundo Kudzula Gondwe.
NWRA CEO Dwight Kambuku made the announcement at a press conference in Lilongwe.
According to Kambuku, the decision was made following recent inspections in various regions.
Out of every 100 boreholes inspected, 75 were found to be constructed in unsafe areas, some even near toilets, posing a threat to people's lives.
Constructing a borehole in an unsafe environment without NWRA approval carries a penalty of two million Kwacha or four years imprisonment.
In light of these findings, the NWRA is currently raising awareness among the public about the importance of certifying their sources of groundwater, including boreholes.
