Nthola-llola Rice Processing Factory Nears Completion, Promising Agricultural and Economic Growth
The Nthola-llola rice processing factory in Karonga is 90% complete, set to boost agro-processing and profit margins for Malawian farmers.
KARONGA, Malawi — The Nthola-llola rice processing factory in Karonga is 90% complete, according to Enock Phale, chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Public Works, writes Rabecca Kaunda.
Phale expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project during a tour on Saturday, saying, "We are pleased with the progress of the project as the committee, and we will make sure we see it through to the end."
The completion of the rice factory is expected to greatly contribute to Malawi's agro-processing sector and increase the value of agricultural products.
Karonga Paramount Chief Kyungu commended the development, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth.
"This is the time for this country to think ahead and build more factories like the one the Greenbelt Authority is constructing in Karonga," he said.
Dr. Chisomo Kumbuyo, the director of irrigation operations at the Greenbelt Authority, urged the members of the parliamentary committee to ensure the allocated funds are disbursed on time and in full amounts, allowing for the successful completion of the project.
"We are committed to delivering on our projects," he said.
"The only thing we want to ask from you, our MPs, is your support in allocating enough funds to our projects and ensuring that we receive the funds in a timely manner."
The contractor currently working on the rice factory expressed optimism, predicting that the project will be completed in the next 30 days.
