The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Youth Sports Ground in Nsanje, marked the beginning of a project expected to enhance sports in the district.
Sports Minister Uchizi Mkandawire expressed his delight at the milestone, highlighting that there had been numerous rumours and speculations surrounding the stadium's construction.
He lauded the collaborative efforts of stakeholders and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) that had made the stadium's construction possible.
"This is a new chapter, and the ground-breaking ceremony has finally been done," Minister Mkandawire stated.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitating and constructing sports infrastructure across the country, including Civo Stadium, Silver Stadium, Griffin Sayenda Sports Complex, and the Aquatic Indoor Sports Complex at the Kamuzu Institute of Sports.
Mkandawire extended gratitude to the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) for its support of FAM, which played a pivotal role in bringing the Nsanje Stadium to fruition.
FAM President Walter Nyamilandu Manda noted that the new stadium would raise the standard of football in the district, fulfilling his dreams of seeing Nsanje equipped with such a facility.
He emphasised the importance of fostering sports development in rural areas and closing the gap between urban and rural teams, citing Chitipa, Karonga, and Dedza as examples.
Nyamilandu Manda also commended Nsanje United Football Club for its performance, suggesting it had a significant chance to compete in the Premier Division.
In response, Nsanje District Council Chairperson Mike Kafalachi assured both the government and FAM that the council would take care of the newly constructed infrastructure.
He called upon the local community to protect the materials and facilities from vandalism or theft, emphasising that the stadium belonged to the people of Nsanje.
The development of Nsanje Stadium is expected to invigorate sports in the district and provide a platform for local talent to flourish.
