Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, has launched a K30 million sports development initiative to promote various sports in the constituency.
NSANJE, Malawi - Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, has launched a K30 million sports development initiative to promote various sports in the constituency, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
MP Ganda made the launch on Independence Day at Bangula United ground in Nsanje.
She said the initiative will support football, netball, volleyball, bawo, athletics, and other sports through the provision of jerseys, boots, goalposts, and pitch rehabilitation.
The MP revealed she has already paid registration fees for some teams participating in the Castel Challenge Cup.
"I want every active participant to benefit," she pledged.
Nsanje District Sports Officer Sherif Malunga hailed the initiative, saying it will develop and improve sports at the constituency and district levels.
He noted that this is the first such comprehensive programme to promote sports at all levels and put Nsanje on the map.
Some teams have joined the Castel Cup and need full support to perform well, Malunga said, revealing that each participating team must pay a K30,000 registration fee, but MP Ganda has covered some clubs in her constituency.
Malunga appealed to referees to be professional in handling games under the initiative.
The launch ceremony also witnessed the finals of the Late Sam Ganda Memorial Cup, worth K4.5 million, which had been postponed.
MP Ganda's K30 million initiative demonstrates how elected leaders can empower communities through sports.
By supporting talents from the grassroots up, Nsanje stands to gain immensely in physical fitness, youth development, and national integration. Let the games begin!
