Nsanje Makes Strides Against Gender Violence
The event included a solidarity march and viewing of pavilions organised by various non-governmental organizations supporting efforts to curb GBV.
NSANJE, Malawi— Authorities in the Shire Valley district of Nsanje say they are making great progress in the battle against gender-based violence (GBV) compared to previous years, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Edison Njembe, Nsanje’s district gender officer, said this on Wednesday during the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism at Senior Group Village Headman Nguluwe in the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje.
He attributed the strides to awareness campaigns that his office and partners are conducting in the district.
Njembe said there has been an influx of partners supporting the efforts against GBV, even after the Spotlight Initiative phased out its activities in Nsanje.
“Even though Spotlight Initiative has gone out of the district, many partners are supporting the battle against GBVs,” he said.
Njembe disclosed that last year the district recorded about 3,000 GBV cases which have gone down to 2,100 cases this year.
Earlier, Senior Chief Tengani, who is also chairperson of Nsanje District Chiefs Forum on GBV, said GBV is a global matter that needs to be dealt with jointly.
“Chiefs should spearhead the role in seeing that these cultural practices are not violated,” he said.
The event included a solidarity march and viewing of pavilions organised by various non-governmental organizations supporting efforts to curb GBV.
It was held under the theme “Unite! Invest to Prevent Gender-Based Violence in Malawi.”
