NRB Declares Completion of National ID Registration Target
Over 10 million people have been registered and legally identified since the registration process began in 2016.
LILONGWE, Malawi - The National Registration Bureau (NRB) has announced that it has achieved its national ID registration target, registering 75% of the population despite facing challenges, including delays in card issuance, writes Abraham Bisayi.
NRB Principal Secretary Mphatso Sambo made the announcement during a media briefing at the bureau's Lilongwe office.
Sambo expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing its contribution to Malawi 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aim for universal legal registration by 2030.
"We faced challenges in the issuance of the cards but we are proud that this has been cleared," Sambo said.
"We are currently printing over 200,000 cards per month and all the cards are being distributed in all the centers across Malawi."
Sambo assured the public that despite reaching the target, the NRB will continue to register any Malawian who hasn't yet obtained a national ID card.
