Northern Malawi football league sees fierce competition, aims December finish
The top performer among these teams will secure a spot in Malawi's top-tier football league.
MZUZU, Malawi— The Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) expressed satisfaction with the level of competition in this year's league, aiming to conclude by mid-December, writes Victor Musongole.
NRFA General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu said the qualification of all new teams for the final eight-team phase demonstrates the league's competitiveness.
"Having all eight new teams in the last phase and most of them qualifying on the last weekend shows there was tough competition and we have hope that this will continue," Nyasulu said.
The final phase is set to begin this weekend and end in mid-December.
"We are following our calendar. Everything is on track and we are optimistic that we will finish the league according to our calendar," Nyasulu added.
Veteran sports writer Phillip Pasula attributed the heightened competition to the introduction of relegation and increased sponsorship.
Eight teams — Ekwaiweni Tafika Sports, Lube Masters, Chintheche United, Eagle Strikers, Songwe Border, Chilumba Barracks, Raiply and Jenda United — will compete for promotion to the Super League.
