Mzimba, Malawi-In a collaborative effort, Action for Progress and Walusungu Community Based Organisation have generously donated a wheelchair to Gogo Mercy Towera Nyumayo in Kamwazeka, Mzimba district, writes Alinafe Sambo.
Gogo Nyumayo, who suffered an accident in 2005 and faced mobility challenges, will now receive much-needed assistance.
Steven Makwakwa, the distributor for Action for Progress, expressed their motivation for the donation.
He said, "After hearing and seeing the condition of Gogo Nyumayo, we thought of coming in to assist with a wheelchair, hoping that it would help reduce some of the problems the family was facing."
Helen Munthali, the director of Walusungu Community Based Organisation, highlighted their longstanding relationship with Gogo Nyumayo.
She stated that the wheelchair donation is a way to show appreciation for the voluntary work Gogo Nyumayo had done when she was still physically strong.
Munthali also emphasised that this act serves as encouragement for others involved in charitable works, not only within their organisation but also in other institutions.
Group Village Headman Kasiya Phiri, who is also the son of the beneficiary, expressed gratitude to Action for Progress and Walusungu Community Based Organisation.
He acknowledged that timely help would ease the challenges they were facing.
Phiri said, "I am so grateful for the gift that we have received. This will bring about a change and help alleviate the problems our family was facing."
He further explained that caring for Gogo Nyumayo had been difficult as they had to carry her, but with the wheelchair, her grandchildren will now have more time to interact and play with her.
The donation of the wheelchair by these nonprofit organisations not only provides Gogo Mercy Towera Nyumayo with improved mobility but also demonstrates the power of community support and charitable acts in bringing positive change to individuals and families in need.
