Nonprofit Brings Clean Water to Mzimba North Communities
The boreholes are expected to benefit thousands in the region, addressing fundamental challenges in water access and community development.
MZIMBA, Malawi— Action for Sustainable Development (ASUD) has installed seven boreholes in Mzimba North, addressing critical water scarcity challenges and improving community well-being, writes LoveMore Shaba.
Executive Director Thomas Ngwira said the project targets communities where women previously spent hours fetching unsafe water, hindering productivity and health.
"Without access to safe and potable water, it was impossible to achieve sustainable development goals in these communities," Ngwira said during the handover ceremony.
The K64 million project, funded by Swiss organization EcoSolidar, aims to transform local living conditions.
Caroline Imesch from EcoSolidar pledged continued support for expanding similar initiatives.
Local leaders praised the collaborative approach. M'mbelwa District Commissioner representative Jacob Mkandawire said the project allows resources to be redirected to other critical areas like education.
Village leader Mlumuzana Zakalia Lungu highlighted the project's impact on women and girls.
"Our girls often missed school during their menstrual periods because of long water-fetching distances," Lungu said.
"Now, we can trust that our women and girls will have access to clean water close to home."
