"No One Will Die of Hunger," Vows Malawi President
Chakwera said his administration is committed to long-term solutions to end the recurring food shortages.
LILONGWE, Malawi - President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera has disclosed that preparations are at an advanced stage for his government to launch a 'Presidential Hunger Initiative' aimed at distributing food relief items to hunger-stricken households across the country, writes Ted Likombola.
Speaking before Parliament on Wednesday, Chakwera said his government has already mobilized some food relief items such as bags of flour to distribute to affected households through the initiative.
"I am fully aware of the hunger situation that has affected many Malawians. Let me assure you that preparations are in progress and at an advanced stage to introduce presidential hunger initiative for my government to distribute food relief items to the affected households," Chakwera vowed.
“No one will die of hunger.”
On the issue of the dry spell, Chakwera said his government is conducting a scientific assessment to establish the impact and that the results will inform the key steps Malawi will take.
Parts of southern Africa including Malawi have experienced severe droughts over the past few years, leaving millions facing hunger.
The World Food Program says nearly 1 million people in Malawi alone are experiencing crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity this year.
Chakwera said his administration is committed to long-term solutions to end the recurring food shortages.
"My administration will make sure that no one dies of hunger. We will work to boost food production and ensure equitable distribution," he said.
