NKHOTAKOTA, Malawi — A wildlife ranger emerged victorious in the 2024 Nkhotakota Rangers Challenge, completing the gruelling 21-kilometre course in 1 hour and 27 minutes, writes Fletcher Chiponda.
Bornwell Kadango triumphed over 144 other participants in the annual event, held Sept. 21 at Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve under the theme "Unite with Rangers Across Africa."
David Nangoma, Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve parks manager, emphasized the event's broader impact.
"This event happens every year in all the 22 parks managed by African Parks," Nangoma said. "The money raised helps rangers who don't have enough materials to do their work."
Kadango highlighted the challenge's personal benefits.
"This event helps us stay fit, which is important for rangers," he said.
Christina Banda led the women's field, finishing in 2 hours and 18 minutes. Frank Maliselino and Titus Malala rounded out the top three overall with times of 1:28 and 1:32, respectively.
