Nkhata Bay Communities Welcome Irrigation Scheme Rehabilitation

Nkhata Bay, Malawi - Communities in Nkhata Bay's Traditional Authority Malanda have pledged their support for the rehabilitation of the Lweya irrigation scheme, writes Rabecca Kaunda.
The project, initiated by the Greenbelt Authority (GBA) and aimed at boosting food security in the district, will see the 700-hectare scheme undergo renovations by SOS Construction Company.
Group Village Headman Chambo Chifipa expressed optimism about the project, stating, "The rehabilitation will ensure water reaches all farms, addressing the previous challenges faced by many farmers."
Nkhata Bay District Commissioner Rodgers Newa echoed these sentiments, highlighting the scheme's potential to enhance agricultural productivity.
"Even during dry spells, farmers will be able to cultivate various crops due to the improved water irrigation system," he explained.
Wester Kosamu, Chairperson of the Greenbelt Authority Board, emphasized that the "mega farms" project seeks to improve the livelihoods of local farmers, not to seize their land.
He encouraged the Lweya community to actively participate and benefit from the project's success.
