Nigeria's Tinubu Reappoints Biotech Agency Chief for Second Term

ABUJA, Nigeria— Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha as Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency for a second five-year term, writes Winston Mwale.
Secretary to the Government George Akume announced the reappointment in an official letter.
The new term begins Oct. 31, 2024, aligning with the National Biotechnology Development Agency Act of 2022.
Mustapha, a professor of bioinorganic chemistry from Kano State's Dambatta Local Government Area, will continue leading the agency's efforts to advance biotechnology research and development in Nigeria.
The reappointment reflects Tinubu's confidence in Mustapha's leadership during his first term, particularly in food security and pharmaceutical production advancement.
Industry experts view the decision as strategic for positioning Nigeria in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
During his initial four-year tenure, Mustapha focused on strengthening the ethical practice of biotechnology for national development, drawing on his background in academia and industry.
