NICE Urges Stakeholders to Use Media in Developmental Projects
Chisomoso Kambandanga, District Information Officer for Nkhata Bay District Council, said NICE's meeting with journalists shows its trust in media.
NKHATA BAY, Malawi — The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust has urged different stakeholders in Nkhata Bay district to use media houses in various developmental projects, writes James Harawa.
Nkhata Bay NICE Program Manager Lucy Kalua made this call during a brief meeting with different media houses in the district on June 3, 2024.
The meeting focused on improving transparency and accountability.
Kalua said media should be used as a tool to influence issues related to transparency in different developmental projects.
"We are encouraging doing things at an open pace, which can bring better development in different areas in the district," she said.
"Media can be used to speak on behalf of others who can't manage to speak for themselves, for example, people from rural areas."
She further added that good governance is essential for good development in the district.
Chisomoso Kambandanga, District Information Officer for Nkhata Bay District Council, said NICE's meeting with journalists shows its trust in media.
"By engaging media houses in reporting on transparency and accountability, it means NICE is going to promote democracy," Kambandanga said.
He further urged journalists to use investigative journalism in writing different stories, saying this will help society and promote transparency and accountability.
"We should not only look at general event stories. It's our duty as journalists to do investigative stories on various issues related to developmental projects," he said.
"As journalists, we act as mouthpieces for societies and citizens. There are people out there who can't manage to speak for themselves, so it's through us that we can write stories paramount to society."
