New Malawi Constituency Maps, Polling Sites Set for 2025 Vote
Changes stem from a legal requirement to conduct delimitation every third general election based on the latest population data from the National Statistics Office.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Malawi's government has gazetted new constituency boundaries along with voter registration centers, constituency tally sites and district tally centers ahead of the 2025 elections, signaling upcoming infrastructure changes, writes Lumbani Kaunda.
The number of parliamentary constituencies will increase to 229 for the upcoming vote, up from 193 in 2019, according to the gazette published this week. The constituencies are being redrawn to account for population shifts and changing political dynamics.
The country's council wards, comprising local governance areas, will grow to 509 from the previous 462.
To register voters, Malawi will establish 6,344 registration centers nationwide, a substantial jump from 5,002 during the last election cycle four years ago. More centers aim to boost voter accessibility.
While the 229 constituency tally centers will remain the same in number, there will be 36 district tally centers to receive results from those sites.
A national tally center in Blantyre will confirm and declare official results as it did before.
The Malawi Electoral Commission says the total number of polling stations is still to be determined after the registration drive creates an updated voter registry.
The commission "pledges to communicate" the polling site figure later.
