New Leadership Elected for Mzimba Hora Press Club
Ephraim Mkali Banda, the PLFM Northern Region correspondent, emerged as the Chairperson of the club after securing 12 votes.
Mzimba, Malawi - The recently-established Mzimba Hora Press Club, a network for journalists based in Mzimba district, has elected its new office bearers in an election supervised by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Mzimba office, writes Vincent Gunde.
Ephraim Mkali Banda, the PLFM Northern Region correspondent, emerged as the Chairperson of the club after securing 12 votes, defeating Elton Mhango, a correspondent for The Nation Newspaper, who received 6 votes.
He will be assisted by Prisca Mphande, a reporter from Mzimba Community Radio Station, who ran unopposed for the position of Deputy Chairperson.
The election also saw Blessings Gondwe of Times being elected as the General Secretary, while Chikumbutso Ngwira assumed the role of Treasurer. Patrice Austine Kachilika, representing the Malawi News Agency (MANA), ran unopposed for the position of project officer.
The Mzimba Hora Press Club's executive members include Cynthia Ngwira from Wazilinda FM, Victoria Yande, Alinafe Sambo, and Laston Phiri, all from Mzimba Community Radio Station.
Upon accepting his position as chairperson, Mkali Banda pledged to work collaboratively with all members to achieve the club's objectives.
He also expressed the club's intention to seek affiliation with the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi).
Joel Phiri, the District Information Officer for Mzimba, encouraged the club's leadership to be inclusive of all its members to promote cooperation and unity.
He emphasised that unity would be essential for the club's sustainability and effectiveness.
Phiri further called on all club members to provide constructive criticism and support to the newly elected committee to ensure the club's success for the benefit of all in the district.
The election of new office bearers signifies an important step forward for the Mzimba Hora Press Club as it aims to enhance collaboration among journalists and promote responsible journalism within the district.
