New Classrooms Ease Crowding at Msongwe CDSS
Msongwe CDSS opened in 2000 and currently enrolls 300 students.
MZUZU, Malawi — Malawi's Ministry of Education has completed construction of two new classroom blocks at Msongwe Community Day Secondary School (CDSS), aiming to improve educational equity and learning outcomes, writes Tionge Hara.
The Equity with Quality and Learning at Secondary (EQUALS) project funded the initiative, expanding the school's capacity.
Minister Visits, Highlights Commitment
Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, Minister of Education, visited the facilities on March 14, 2024, underscoring the government's dedication to educational opportunities in the region.
Addressing Overcrowding
The new blocks address previous classroom shortages and overcrowding.
"We used to have only four classroom blocks," explained Msongwe CDSS Headteacher Mrs. Lizzie Sakala.
"It was difficult, with students even learning under trees to avoid disturbing others during exams. We are grateful for the additional blocks."
Further Needs Outlined
Sakala expressed gratitude for the government's support while highlighting remaining needs.
"We would appreciate help from well-wishers with a detached house, a hall, and a library," she said.
"Students struggle to study at night due to security concerns as no teachers reside on campus. A detached house would allow teachers to be present and ensure student safety."
