NCD Alliance Malawi Marks World Asthma Day with Awareness Push
Mwakasungula called upon the government to invest in non-communicable disease programs to effectively manage conditions like asthma through early detection, treatment, and awareness.
BLANTYRE, Malawi — The NCD Alliance Malawi commemorated World Asthma Day 2024 under the theme "Asthma Education Empowers," reiterating its commitment to raising awareness about non-communicable diseases like asthma, writes Gift Kaimira.
The alliance, a national civil society network, aims to reduce the burden of preventable morbidity and disability due to non-communicable diseases and injuries affecting Malawians.
In a press release, Chairperson Maud Mwakasungula urged the government to intensify awareness about preventable morbidity associated with asthma, despite the existence of effective treatments.
"Asthma affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450,000 deaths annually, most of which are preventable," Mwakasungula said.
"There is a need for increased efforts to ensure environmentally friendly inhaled medications are available in Malawi and other countries, adhering to the principle of leaving no one behind."
