National Bank Donates K10 Million in Medical Equipment to Dedza Hospital
The initiative is part of NBM's broader corporate social responsibility program, which has already benefitted hospitals in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Dowa, and other districts.
DEDZA, Malawi— The National Bank of Malawi (NBM) donated medical equipment worth K10 million to Dedza District Hospital on Thursday, addressing critical shortages in the facility's emergency and maternity wards, writes Edward Chikwanda.
The donation comes as the hospital struggles with limited resources, including only nine delivery beds to serve approximately 600 expectant mothers monthly.
Maureen Gwembele, NBM's Lilongwe Service Centre Manager, said the bank chose Dedza Hospital due to its location near the M1 road, which leads to frequent casualty admissions.
"We are targeting 12 hospitals across the country, and Dedza is the ninth to benefit from this social responsibility initiative," Gwembele said.
Dr. Isaac Mbingwani, Director of Health and Social Services at the hospital, welcomed the donation, noting the facility's unique challenges as a border district hospital.
"We receive many casualties, and being a border district, some patients come from neighbouring countries to get medical services," he said.
The donated equipment includes oxygen concentrators, delivery beds, and private screens. Eliza Filimon, a local mother of two, praised the donation's potential impact on maternal care.
"This equipment will enable patients, especially expectant mothers, to deliver without challenges," she said.
The initiative is part of NBM's broader corporate social responsibility program, which has already benefitted hospitals in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Dowa, and other districts.
