Naphin CBO Calls for Support in Caring for Elderly in Zomba
Naphin CBO urges well-wishers to assist in providing food and care for elderly people in Traditional Authority Malemia, Zomba.
ZOMBA, MALAWI — Naphin Community Based Organisation (CBO) is calling on well-wishers to lend a helping hand in feeding and caring for elderly people in the area of Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba, writes Peter Davieson.
Lazarus Kawawa, Director of Naphin, highlighted the challenges faced by elderly people that require immediate intervention.
"Some of these people lack our support in terms of food and care, while others are living alone and lack basic needs. That is why we are calling on well-wishers to support us with funds so that we can reach out to them with necessities," Kawawa said.
To ensure the well-being of the elderly, Naphin has established village committees to start businesses and provide opportunities for teaching young girls about everyday life and longevity.
Kawawa also urged people to refrain from labelling the elderly as witches.
These statements were made during an elderly celebration event organised by Naphin CBO and DIMIT in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa, Grace Kwelepeta.
The event aimed to cherish the elderly and emphasise their importance to society.
Commenting on the event, Kwelepeta urged everyone to take care of the elderly, stating that as a Member of Parliament, they rely on the wisdom and guidance of the elderly.
"We celebrate this day not only by giving them gifts but also by reminding each other how we can take care of our elder people. These people are our parents and advisors when we lack knowledge. As we celebrate, I brought basic needs such as blankets, soap, sugar, flour, and cooking oil for them to take home," Kwelepeta said.
Agnes Chambite, Social Welfare Assistant Officer for Zomba District Council, expressed concern over the allegations of labelling elderly people as witches.
She emphasised that such actions are crimes with penalties, including paying fines or imprisonment.
Chambite also mentioned the existence of bylaws in other areas to protect the rights of elderly parents.
The call for support from Naphin CBO serves as a reminder of the importance of caring for the elderly and ensuring their well-being in Zomba's Traditional Authority Malemia’s area.
