Nankhumwa Launches People's Development Party, Vows Economic Revival
The PDP enters a crowded field of parties vying for power in the May 2025 tripartite elections, with Malawi's economy and development challenges expected to be central issues.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Kondwani Nankhumwa officially launched his new People's Development Party (PDP) on Sunday, pledging to revive Malawi's struggling economy if elected in the 2025 polls, writes Esther Banda.
Addressing a crowd at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe, Nankhumwa said the PDP, registered on April 26, is ready to contest as a "people's party" aimed at achieving financial stability.
"I announce it here that this marks the beginning of economic recovery in this country," said Nankhumwa, who was expelled from the Democratic Progressive Party in January.
"PDP is geared to work with young and capable Malawians who are willing to take Malawi to the next level."
He vowed that a PDP government would empower and employ more youths across all sectors as the "key drivers" of prosperity.
Nankhumwa also promised policies to ensure national food security by reopening ADMARC markets for farmers to sell produce at fair prices.
"A lot of Malawians are starving and dying every day from hunger," he said. "PDP has created policies that will ensure food security."
The newly minted party leader encouraged women and youths to join the PDP's decision-making ranks, including selection of a female vice president ahead of a planned September convention to elect a full National Governing Council.
PDP General Secretary Simion Phiri praised Nankhumwa's willingness to work with vendors and others contributing to the national economy.
"The president is willing to work with those that contribute to the economy like vendors, then he is a great leader who wishes well of his country," Phiri said.
