SALIMA, Malawi— After Cyclone Freddy destroyed her home, Trifonia Makanga has found hope and happiness with support from Nakondwa CBO and UK residents, writes Peter Chilongo.
Makanga, a single mother who relied on subsistence farming, faced unbearable circumstances as her crops were washed away during heavy downpours.
Speaking about her experience, she said, "I gave up on having a roof over my house after the devastating loss caused by Cyclone Freddy."
However, thanks to the joint efforts of Nakondwa CBO and generous supporters, Makanga's life took a remarkable turn.
She expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am eternally grateful to Nakondwa CBO for their unwavering support. They have given me hope and a new beginning. My family and I are grateful for this second chance at rebuilding our lives."
Balakasi, Director of Nakondwa CBO, recalled the devastating aftermath of the cyclone and the dire situation Makanga faced.
"The destruction caused by Cyclone Freddy was truly devastating. Trifonia and many others lost their homes and belongings, leaving them in a state of despair. Immediate action was required to rebuild their lives and restore hope," he said.
Recognizing the urgency to provide assistance, Patrick Dokotala, the Social Welfare Officer of Salima District Council, partnered with Nakondwa CBO to support affected families.
Dokotala emphasised their commitment to social welfare, stating, "After the cyclone, our community faced a severe crisis, and it was our duty to ensure that affected families received support and were able to rebuild their lives. We joined forces with Nakondwa CBO to provide comprehensive aid."
Nakondwa CBO continues its efforts to reach out to the less privileged in Salima, including the elderly, orphans, and school-going children, by providing essential supplies such as food, shelter, and learning materials to the communities.
