Mzuzu University Donates to Orphans, Holds Luncheon
To commemorate the donation, representatives from both groups gathered for a special luncheon celebrating generosity.
MZUZU, Malawi- In a heartwarming display of support, the Mzuzu University Trust donated a significant sum to the local community-based organization Walusungu, which provides care for orphans and needy children in Mzuzu, writes Tionge Hara.
To commemorate the donation, representatives from both groups gathered for a special luncheon celebrating generosity.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Wales Singini also pledged a monthly donation of K100,000 to further aid Walusungu's mission.
"As we draw closer to Christmas Eve, we thought it wise to support these orphans and needy children, when most families get to enjoy the season with their own," Singini told AfricaBrief.
He called on other universities to make similar donations, saying "these children are the foundation of the world."
Margaret Nthindwa, Walusungu's founder and chairwoman, thanked Mzuzu University for the gesture.
"We are very happy and honored for this initiative and we will forever be grateful since it's not an easy thing," she said.
Nthindwa told media that rising costs have strained the organization's ability to provide food. She also hopes to someday have a permanent home for Walusungu.
"We were given a plot four years ago by well-wishers but it's not yet built since the one who promised to build fell sick," she explained.
"We can be very happy if well-wishers can start building for us.”
Mary Banda, one of 80 children aided by Walusungu, welcomed and thanked Singini at the event.
Since 2007, the organization has helped 11 youths attend university.
