Mzuzu Stadium Reopens, Excites Football Enthusiasts
The Mzuzu City Council puts the capacity of Mzuzu Stadium at 14,200 spectators.
MZUZU, Malawi - The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has reopened Mzuzu Stadium, much to the delight of football enthusiasts in Mzuzu City, writes Victor Musongole
The stadium was closed in August this year for failing to meet certain requirements.
The reopening follows an inspection conducted by the association on October 31, 2023. “As a follow-up to the inspection of Mzuzu Stadium on October 31, 2023, I wish to communicate FAM First Instant Body (FIB) decision to reopen the stadium following its ban,” reads part of a letter signed by FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda.
The letter further advises the City Council to replace the steel goal posts with aluminium and work on media and control rooms by February next year.
Among the improvements made to the stadium are pitch leveling, replacement of the perimeter fence, maintenance of dressing rooms and toilets, and redemarcation of stands.
Officials from Moyale Barracks and Ekwendeni Hammers, who had been using Rumphi Stadium as their home ground following the closure of Mzuzu Stadium, lamented the impact of the closure on their teams due to increased expenses.
