Mzuzu Residents Laud C.J.E Cleaning Services for Transforming Township Hygiene

Mzuzu, Malawi — Residents of Mzuzu have praised C.J.E. Cleaning Services, describing it as a powerful tool in maintaining the townships' cleanliness, smartness, and beauty, writes Susan Moyo.
Offering door-to-door rubbish collection services for an average monthly fee of K2000, the company has efficiently addressed the area's long-standing waste management dilemma.
For years, Mzuzu residents struggled with home garbage disposal, resulting in littering and dumping along roadsides and rivers, creating water pollution.
The effort is now being carried out in townships such as Chibavi, Chibanja, Zolo-Zolo, Mchengautuba, Katoto, and Chiputula, according to Chipiliro Phiri, executive director of C.J.E. Cleaning Services.
Phiri emphasised the initiative's positive impact in these areas, citing considerable advances in domestic trash management since its inception seven years ago.
"Every week, we collect garbage from homes and dispose of it in designated locations," he explained.
“We came up with this idea after noting that many individuals in townships lacked suitable garbage cans, resulting in poor waste management at home and in communities."
In addition to improving sanitary standards, the project has created job possibilities for unemployed teenagers, allowing them to support themselves.
Annie Mwanza, a resident of Chibavi Settlement, praised C.J.E. Cleaning Services for helping to improve the cleanliness of her home.
"C.J.E Cleaning Services is doing an admirable job," she said, expressing her gratitude. Due to limited land, it is quite difficult to have a garbage dump here. In my situation, I used to dig one, but the available space has now been depleted. This effort has saved my life, and I no longer have to worry about garbage management."
Mary Shaba, another Chibanja township resident, emphasised the assistance she receives from C.J.E. Cleaning Services with rubbish collection.
"I bought a trash can, but the problem arises when it fills up," she explained. I didn't know where to dispose of the rubbish, so I threw the bin everywhere, ignoring the safety of others."
Angella Phiri from Chibavi echoed the same thoughts, praising the effort for improving hygienic practices and altering the city's waste disposal habits.
"I am extremely grateful for this initiative," she remarked. Previously, we had no alternative but to dispose of trash near a river that was extremely close to us. But that is now history. Because of C.J.E. Cleaning, our homes and communities are clean and smart.
Phiri also stated that she intends to repurpose the waste gathered by transforming it into usable items such as organic manure. This programme attempts to provide farmers with an alternative to rising fertiliser expenses.
Charles Bakolo, an environmental activist, praised C.J.E. Cleaning Services' efforts but urged citizens to take responsibility for controlling their domestic garbage and encouraged recycling practises.
"Having a door-to-door waste collection initiative is a great idea," he emphasised, "but communities around the city should be trained on how to manage their waste by recycling and transforming it into a usable form."
As C.J.E. Cleaning Services continues to make strides in improving waste management in Mzuzu, residents are hopeful that this initiative will serve as a model for other regions, promoting cleanliness, environmental preservation, and a sense of community responsibility.
