Mzuzu City Hammers Land K30M Betika Sponsorship Deal

MZUZU, Malawi— Malawi's Mzuzu City Hammers have secured a K30 million sponsorship deal with sports betting company Betika for the 2024 season, writes Victor Musongole.
The three-year partnership, announced Friday at a ceremony in Mzuzu, will see Betika provide the Super League club with a cash package, branded team kits and replica jerseys bearing the company's logo.
Betika will also award a K200,000 monthly prize for the team's best player.
Betika Malawi Country Manager Gift Govati said the sponsorship aims to aid talent development while boosting brand visibility.
"With this partnership we hope the team will do well this season while we increase our brand's visibility," he said.
Hammers Chairperson Gift Mkandawire expressed excitement over the financial backing, stating it will improve the team's performance as it targets a top eight finish.
He revealed the club purchased a 29-seater bus using a loan to reduce transportation costs.
The ceremony featured jersey auctions, with Sulom President Gilbert Mitawa buying a replica for K500,000.
FAM Vice President Lameck Khonje and Henry Banda each purchased one for K200,000.
Officials present included Mzuzu City Council CEO Gomezgani Nyasulu, FAM representative Akuzike Kafwamba and Sulom Vice General Secretary Donnex Chilonga.
Sulom Vice General Secretary Chilonga welcomed the partnership, saying, "It's our wish to see Super League teams have impactful sponsors."
