MZUZU, Malawi— Mzuzu City Hammers defeated Blantyre-based Bangwe All Stars 2-0 in a TNM Super League match at Mzuzu Stadium on Thursday, propelling the home team to third place in the standings, writes Victor Musongole.
Isaac Msiska capitalized on a defensive error to give Mzuzu City the lead in the first half. Samuel Adeyemi doubled the advantage five minutes into the second half with a long-range strike from near the center circle.
Despite the scoreline, both teams missed clear opportunities throughout the match.
Bangwe All Stars coach Rodgers Yasin called the defeat painful, attributing it to a lack of composure.
"At the end of the day, it's goals that count. We had a number of chances in the first half we missed. Our finishing was not good," Yasin said.
Mzuzu City Hammers coach Kondwa Ikwanga, while pleased with the win, expressed concern about his team's lack of aggression.
"We planned to attack from the word go. We have to work on finishing, though we utilized half chances while missing clear-cut opportunities," Ikwanga said in a post-match interview.
The victory moves Mzuzu City Hammers to third place with 31 points, while Bangwe All Stars remain second from bottom with 12 points.
