MZUZU, Malawi — Mzuzu Baptist Church celebrated the graduation of 22 women from its vocational skills training program on Friday, emphasizing the potential of such initiatives to improve living standards across Malawi, writes Lovemore Shaba.
Pastor Francis Kisebe highlighted the church's commitment to equipping women with practical skills.
"The graduates who have received certificates will now start supporting their families economically, which will benefit the church and the nation at large," Kisebe said during the ceremony.
The four-month course focused on tailoring and fashion design, aiming to foster entrepreneurship and economic independence among participants.
Bridget Meenifumbo, representing the Women's Department of the Baptist Convention of Malawi (BACOMA), called for increased enrollment in vocational training programs.
"We want to see more young people and women in entrepreneurship, which can only be achieved through vocational skills training," she said.
Graduate Sellah Nyirenda expressed optimism about her future prospects.
"I am happy today that I have graduated. This will help me to have a job and create more job opportunities for others," Nyirenda said.
The Mzuzu Baptist Vocational Skills Training Center, established in 2022, aims to address poverty by providing practical skills to community members.
