Mzimba Youth group urges land rights for women to boost food security
MYO is providing farm inputs to 50 farmers in the area.
MZIMBA, Malawi— A local organization is calling on communities in Mzimba District to grant women land ownership rights, aiming to enhance food security at the household level, writes Victoria Yande.
Moses Nkhana, executive director of Mzimba Youth Organization (MYO), made the plea during a farmer training session under the project "Enhancing food security in strengthening Land rights in the context of food security."
"We trained farmers on gender-related issues and customary systems to empower women and girls to have land ownership," Nkhana said.
"This will help reduce climate change and improve farming, as most women are at the forefront of various activities."
The training seeks to bridge the gender gap in accessing natural resources, including land.
Nkhana emphasized the importance of village development and project committees in fostering women's participation.
Agnes Mumba, a trainee from Gwaba Nkhana village, highlighted the training's value in reducing discrimination.
Another participant, Fera Mhone, noted its importance as many men seek work in South Africa.
