Mzimba Youth Group Launches Fundraiser to Combat Rising Suicide Rates

MZIMBA, Malawi— The Mzimba Inspired Talented Youth Club (MITAYOC) spearheads a critical fundraising campaign to address mental health challenges in the district, targeting K12 million through a December 13 fundraising dinner, writes Victoria Yande.
Programs manager Sibusiso Shaba cited alarming local data revealing 19 suicide cases between April and August 2024 as the primary motivation for the awareness initiative.
"We thought it wise to do something to fill the gap in reaching people about mental health," Shaba said.
The campaign highlights multiple factors contributing to mental health struggles, including:
- Economic hardships
- Relationship challenges
- Lack of counseling services
- Social pressures affecting young people
Shaba emphasized the urgent need for community intervention, noting that various life challenges are driving increasing mental health and suicide risks.
The fundraising dinner at Sandstone Hall aims to:
- Raise awareness about mental health
- Provide civic education
- Generate financial support for community mental health programs
