Mzimba Stakeholders Welcome New Malawi Electoral Laws
As Malawi prepares for the forthcoming elections on September 16, 2025, such initiatives are instrumental in paving the way for a fair, credible, and inclusive electoral exercise.
MZIMBA, Malawi— Electoral stakeholders in Mzimba North have welcomed the new electoral laws and the ongoing constituency and ward re-demarcation process ahead of Malawi's 2025 tripartite elections, writes Lumbani Kaunda.
During a sensitization meeting on Monday in Ekwendeni, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Anthony Mukumbwa emphasized the importance of public understanding for the success of the polls.
"We need to educate the public to mitigate potential issues such as voter apathy and invalid votes, which are crucial factors in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process," Mukumbwa said.
MEC official Stella Mwachande highlighted the ongoing redrawing of ward and constituency boundaries as mandated by recent legislation, a process initiated last year.
One notable provision discussed was the requirement for a rerun if no presidential candidate secures over 50% of the votes, a measure aimed at ensuring the legitimacy and inclusivity of the electoral outcomes.
Traditional Authorities Mtwalo, Mpherembe, and Jalavikuwa from the Mzimba Chiefs Council attended the informative session, signifying a collaborative effort among key stakeholders to promote transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
The comprehensive dissemination of information regarding the new electoral laws reflects a proactive approach by the MEC and other stakeholders to foster public trust and participation in the democratic process.
