Mzimba South Health Office Concludes Breastfeeding Week With Community Event
World Breastfeeding Week, observed annually in early August, is backed by WHO, UNICEF, and various health ministries and civil society organizations globally.
MZIMBA, Malawi— The Mzimba South District Health Office wrapped up World Breastfeeding Week with a celebration on Saturday, emphasizing community support for nursing mothers, writes Lumbani Kaunda.
Councillor Dan Nkosi of Endindeni Ward, the event's guest of honour, urged widespread backing for breastfeeding mothers.
"Mothers need our full support to ensure that babies are exclusively breastfed in their households, so they can grow up healthy and become productive citizens in the future," Nkosi said.
Dr. Prince Chirwa, director of health and social services for Mzimba South DHO, stressed male involvement in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
"Male involvement plays a crucial role in raising a healthy child," Chirwa said.
"With active participation from men, we can make a significant impact on the success of exclusive breastfeeding initiatives."
John Banda, representing development partners, praised collaboration among donors, local government, and the community.
He also cautioned against cultural practices harmful to child development.
The event, themed "Closing the Gap—Breastfeeding Support for All," featured cultural performances and was supported by organizations including Feed the Future and Malawi Red Cross Society.
