Malawi: Police in Mzimba District are looking for unknown assailants who stabbed Elizabeth Juwa, 50, and Witness Phiri, 47, to death at Euthini in the district on the night of July 23–24, 2022.

According to reports, Juwa, Phiri, and a four-year-old child named Alinafe Gondwe, who is currently being treated at Mzuzu Central Hospital for burns, were fast asleep on the specified date and time.

The house where they were sleeping caught fire in the middle of the night. Neighbors discovered that both women were dead and that a child, Alinafe, was still alive but with burnt wounds.

The incident was reported to police, who arrived at the scene with medical personnel. The two women died as a result of blood loss caused by stab wounds in their heads, according to a postmortem performed by a medical officer.

Preliminary investigations revealed that after murdering the two, the perpetrators set fire to the house in order to conceal evidence.

Meanwhile, police are looking for the perpetrators, who will face murder and arson charges if they are apprehended.

Furthermore, police are urging members of the public who may have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects in the case to come forward.

Elizabeth Juwa was from Chikoya Mhango village, while Witness Phiri was from Jonas Gondwe village, both in Mzimba's Traditional Authority Mpherembe.
