KARONGA, Malawi— Karonga United advanced to the round of 16 in the FDH Bank Cup with a 2-1 victory over Mzuzu City Hammers on Sunday at Karonga Stadium, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Blessings Mwalilino starred for the home side, scoring twice to secure the win. His first goal came in the 20th minute, latching onto a through ball from Nangi Songa.
Mwalilino doubled Karonga's lead in the 51st minute, tapping in a cross from Saulos Moyo.
Wongani Lungu pulled one back for Mzuzu City Hammers from the penalty spot in the 58th minute, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback.
The match, played before a large partisan crowd, saw the visitors start strongly but fail to capitalize on their early dominance.
Karonga's defense held firm in the closing stages to preserve the win.
Karonga United coach Oscar Kaunda expressed satisfaction with his team's performance.
"We were superb from minute one, and as a coach, I'm very happy that we have managed to qualify for the next round of the cup," Kaunda said.
Mzuzu City Hammers' newly appointed coach, Kondwani Ikwanga, declined to comment after the match.
