Mutharika Calls for Cement & Malata Subsidy Resumption for Cyclone Freddy Survivors
Mutharika Urges Resumption of Cement & Malata Subsidy for Cyclone Freddy Survivors in Malawi's South, writes Judgement Katika.
THYOLO, Malawi - Former President of Malawi, Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, has called for the resumption of the Cement and Malata subsidy program to assist cyclone Freddy survivors in rebuilding their lives in the southern region of the country, writes Judgement Katika.
Mutharika made the appeal during a visit to Thyolo, where he met with cyclone Freddy victims who are currently camping at Chisoka and Lunchenza Primary Schools in the district.
"The Malata and Cement subsidy program that was championed under my administration was meant to benefit rural communities that build their houses using mud bricks and common thatching grass instead of iron sheets. These houses can't withstand natural disasters. Therefore, the MCP government must consider a resumption of the program, targeting cyclone Freddy victims," said Mutharika.
Mutharika emphasized that the cement and malata subsidy program was designed to assist less privileged Malawians in building strong houses that are resilient to natural disaster shocks.
He urged the continuation of the program to ensure that people are given affordable housing while other initiatives are undertaken to help them rebuild their lives.
During his visit, Mutharika also made a donation of food items worth K21.8 million to the Cyclone Freddy victims, demonstrating his commitment to supporting those affected by the disaster.
Mutharika was accompanied by several senior officials from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), including Regional Governor for the South Charles Mchacha, National Organizing Secretary Chimwemwe Chipungu, and former Reserve Bank Governor and DPP Presidential aspirant Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, among others.
