"Music is My Passion" Says Rising Malawian Singer

BLANTYRE, Malawi - "Music chose me from the start," says Mtameni Kachusa, a young and energetic Malawian R&B and soul singer who is making waves on the music scene, writes Lusungu Chibambo.
Kachutsa, who goes by the stage name Mtameni, has loved music since childhood. "Watching the VMA's when I was young got me thinking music is everything," he says.
"I saw myself as a singer from a young age."
The 27-year-old recalls writing his first song at age 10. In 2010, while still in secondary school, he recorded his first track.
Since then, he's been prolifically writing and producing songs like "Nkhata Bay Road," "No Reason," and "January," a collaboration with Twanda.
Mtameni's recently released "Uncle Mtame" was inspired by conversations with his mother when he first left home for the cities of Mzuzu and Lilongwe.
The song was recorded in Mchinji with legendary Malawian guitarist Eric Paliani.
He acknowledges that while Malawi's music industry is rising, the biggest obstacle is courage.
"Anyone who wants to do music should be patient and willing to consistently work on becoming better every day," Mtameni advises.
His music can now be found on all major streaming platforms, like Spotify, Deezer, YouTube and iTunes. Mtameni believes in himself, saying he does music "for the love of it."
