MRA Lauds Northern Media for Spreading the Message
Reporter Alepher Katsongo of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation said the instruction is invaluable to journalists.
MZUZU, Malawi— Members of the media in Malawi's Northern Region have been called on to keep disseminating tax information to the public, writes Tionge Hara.
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) views the media as a key partner in boosting voluntary tax compliance nationwide, said MRA Marketing and Communications Manager Wilma Chalulu.
She stressed the importance of media outlets and the vital role they play in circulating details to Malawians.
The presence of reporters shows the patriotism they have for the country as the MRA works to heighten tax compliance, Chalulu added.
She noted that over the last seven months of the fiscal year, the agency has seen numerous compliant taxpayers pay their full tax liabilities on time.
The taxes enable the government to provide various social services like purchasing medicines for hospitals, learning materials for public schools, and civil servant salaries, Chalulu said.
"Taxes are the lifeblood of development projects such as constructing roads, bridges, clinics and school blocks," she said.
"That's why the MRA annually conducts media training where we explain our operations and changes in tax laws everyone must follow."
Reporter Alepher Katsongo of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation said the instruction is invaluable to journalists.
"It's providing insights into taxes and other emerging MRA developments," Katsongo said.
"This will help us circulate accurate, rich content to the public."
Katsongo said she was delighted to participate because the training improves her reporting skills on revenue issues and MRA operations.
The ongoing training has been attended by various print, online and electronic media outlets.
Previous sessions occurred in Blantyre and Lilongwe, with the latest taking place in Mzuzu.
