MP's Bridge Project Connects Community

KASUNGU, Malawi-A member of parliament for Kasungu East who also serves as the first deputy speaker at the parliament, Madalitso Fred Kazombo, has undertaken a controversial bridge construction project in his constituency, writes Tionge Hara.
The Livwezi Bridge project started 6 months ago with the aim of improving infrastructure and benefiting the local community.
A closer look reveals a web of political motivations behind Kazombo's infrastructure project.
Nicknamed "Kamatcheni," Kazombo has curried favor with the people of Kasungu East since being elected to parliament, with many singing his praises for development projects funded through the Constituency Development Fund.
Kazombo highlighted the long-standing development challenges faced by Kasungu East, which served as a key motivator for his election campaign.
He emphasized his commitment to creating tangible improvements for the constituency.
"This year, I have overseen the completion of the Chamama Market and the Chikanda Bridge, projects that address vital needs and improve the lives of many residents," he stated.
"These initiatives were made possible through the Constituency Development Fund."
The Livwezi Bridge holds particular significance after two children from the same family drowned at the river crossing in 2018.
"This bridge is the most important thing to the constituency," said Charles Tomoka, 45, the ADC treasurer of the area.
"We lost two kids of the same family after they drowned in the river. So with this development we are happy people and we give thanks to God for sending Kamatcheni to us."
While many constituents have benefited from Kazombo's work, some critics have accused the MP of using development funds as a political tool to boost his popularity.
"Lives have been lost in the past years due to the problem we had of no bridge," said Beatrice Daniel, a local resident.
"But now we sing good songs."
In addition to bridges, Kazombo has used constituency funds to construct schools, health facilities, and other infrastructure projects during his time in office.
