MPCC Urges Government to Increase Funding for Ministry of Natural Resources
Chairperson of the Natural Resources Committee in Parliament, Werani Chilenga, made this statement on 16 January 2023, during a tree planting exercise in Lilongwe.
Malawi: The Malawi Parliamentary Conservation Caucus (MPCC) has urged the government to increase funding for the Ministry of Natural Resources, writes Temwani Chimpima.
Chairperson of the Natural Resources Committee in Parliament, Werani Chilenga, made this statement on January 16, 2023, during a tree planting exercise in Lilongwe along the Bingu National Stadium-Interchange road.
He emphasized the need for the government and other stakeholders to take part in environmental conservation efforts.
However, Chilenga expressed concern about the lack of coordination between the government and the Lilongwe City Council in managing the environment.
"Up to now, we don't know where the trees that were cut in the six-lane construction have gone since we were told that they will make learner's desks,” he said.
Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Center, Alfred Jiya, also urged people in his constituency to take care of the trees. Over 300 trees were planted during the exercise, which was participated by organizations such as CISONEC, Association of Environmental Journalists, National Youth Network for Climate Change (NYNCC), Centre for Applied System Analysis (CASA), and Lilongwe Wildlife Trust (LWT) among others.
