MP Threatens to "Go to Tanzania" Over Lack of Development
Kalua argued that development should be distributed equally, as "Malawi is for everyone."
LILONGWE, Malawi - Rumphi East Parliamentarian Kamulepo Kalua said Tuesday he will "go to Tanzania" if the government continues to sideline his constituency from development projects, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Speaking in parliament, Kalua claimed Rumphi East has seen little development despite being an influential constituency in Malawi's political history.
"It is sad to note that Rumphi East is still retarding developments despite being a political influencer in the history of politics in the country," Kalua told parliament.
Kalua warned that he will "go to Tanzania" if the situation does not improve and his area continues to be denied development projects.
"If the situation will be the same in shunning my area with projects, it will be better for me to go to Tanzania," Kalua said.
Kalua argued that development should be distributed equally, as "Malawi is for everyone."
However, Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda dismissed the claims, saying the government distributes development projects equally nationwide.
Chimwendo Banda cited the K100 million Constituency Development Fund given to each constituency for projects guided by MPs.
"The M1 road which the government is constructing will pass through Rumphi East," Chimwendo Banda added.
