MP Ganda Advocates for Parliamentary Involvement to Boost Africa’s Agricultural Productivity
Her advocacy underscores the crucial role of parliament in overseeing policies and financing in the agriculture sector at the national level across the continent.
LUSAKA, Zambia — Gladys Ganda, Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje constituency, has underscored the need for parliamentary involvement to bring about meaningful transformation and high productivity in Africa’s agriculture sector, writes Moses Thole.
Currently attending the African Food Systems Parliamentary Network in Lusaka, Zambia, Ganda emphasized that for the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) agenda to be successful and meet its goals, parliament should not be left behind.
Ganda, who also serves as the chairperson on the budget and finance committee of parliament in Malawi, moderated the first session of the African Food Systems Parliamentary Network.
The session discussed various issues, including how the continent plans to address the perennial hunger problem and food systems that Africa has been grappling with over a decade.
Many agriculture experts attribute this dwindling food productivity to the effects of climate change, a phenomenon from which Malawi is not immune.
Coming from an area where irrigation farming is a main activity to ensure food security at the household level, Ganda has always encouraged her constituents to take farming seriously.
Her advocacy underscores the crucial role of parliament in overseeing policies and financing in the agriculture sector at the national level across the continent.
