MP Donates Flour to 250 Elderly in Chikwawa
Mia, who is also the Member of Parliament for the area, said she wanted to provide food for the elderly who have nothing to eat at this time.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi - Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Sidik Mia donated flour to about 250 elderly people who have nothing to depend on in Chikwawa Nkombezi constituency on Saturday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Mia, who is also the Member of Parliament for the area, said she wanted to provide food for the elderly who have nothing to eat at this time.
Apart from donating the maize flour, she also wanted to find out who is benefiting from several government initiatives that support communities.
"Some people are benefiting from more than one source of finances, which is seeing some people left off the beneficiary list," she said.
According to the minister, the government is equally concerned that some people are benefiting from more than one source of finance.
Group Village Headman Goma thanked the MP for providing the flour, saying the 2023/24 rainy season has seen erratic rainfall that is not promising a bumper harvest.
"Both the social cash transfer funds and flour donated have come at a time as crops have begun to wilt because of the prolonged dry spell in the area," the traditional leader said.
Mia observed that the donation was necessary because "the elderly have no food to eat at this difficult time."
She said her office would look into reports of some people taking advantage of multiple government assistance programs to ensure aid is distributed fairly.
